  47.         This disk contains the ELSA WINNER Display Driver for
  48.         Microsoft Windows 95.
  49.  
  50.     The drivers support 256, 32768 and 16 Million colors in all
  51.     resolutions available on used ELSA WINNER board.

  95. 3.      Installation
  96.  
  97.     This section descibes the steps to install a ELSA WINNER
  98.     Display Driver for Windows 95
  99.  
  100.  
  101. 3.1     Install over older versions of the ELSA WINNER Driver
  102.  
  103.     - Delete in the WINDOWS\INF directory the copies of the
  104.       older versions ELSADISP.INF (named OEM?.INF).
  105.     - Install the original MS-S3 driver to build a new Device
  106.       Information Database.
  107.     - Now follow th steps, described in section 3.2.

  110. 3.2     First installation of ELSA WINNER Display Drivers
  111.  
  112.     First install Windows 95 without special drivers for the ELSA
  113.     WINNER graphics board. The installation procedure should
  114.     install a Microsoft driver for boards based on S3 chips.
  115.  
  116.     The installation of the ELSA WINNER Display Driver starts from
  117.     the Windows desktop.
  118.  
  119.     - Start the dialog "Properties for Display" by clicking right
  120.       mouse button on the desktop or per Control Panel.
  121.     - Select the Property Page "Settings"
  122.     - Push the button "Change Display Type...". A dialog "Change
  123.       Display Type" will pop up.
  124.     - Push the button "Change..." inside the frame "Adapter Type".
  125.       You will see the "Select Device" dialog.
  126.     - In this dialog push the button "Have Disk..." and insert the
  127.       ELSA WINNER Windows95 Driver Disk in the appropiate drive.
  128.         - Select in the "Manufacturer" list ELSA WINNER Display Driver
  129.           and in the list "Models" your WINNER board.
  130.     - If you use an ELSA monitor, make the same procedure for
  131.       "Monitor Type" in the "Change Display Type" dialog.
  132.         - Close the dialog "Change Display Type". At this time the
  133.           screen flickers a moment. This is not a bug! Windows tries to
  134.           find out, which graphics modes are available with this
  135.           driver.
  136.         - Now you can select resolution and color depth in the main
  137.           dialog "Properties for Display". For the first installation
  138.           you should select 1024x768 and 256 colors. This configuration
  139.           is available for all memory configurations on all ELSA
  140.           Boards.
  141.         - Close "Properties for Display" by "OK" or "Apply
  142.           now".
  143.  
  144.     Normally you need to boot your system. Push the button "Restart
  145.     now".
  146.  
  147.     In all following Windows sessions you can change the resolution
  148.     without rebooting your system.

  183. 5.      Release notes
  184.  
  185. 5.1     ELSA.INI entries
  186.  
  187.     The working mode of the driver can manipulate by entries in the
  188.     file ELSA.INI. Normally you will need to reboot your machine to
  189.     mak this settings working. In later releases ELSA will
  190.     distribute a tool change working paramters more easy.
  191.  
  192.     The following table shows the meaning of this entries:

  194.     Section [Settings]
  195.  
  196.     CursorFG/CursorBK
  197.  
  198.         With this two entries you can change the color of the
  199.         hardware cursor. The format is:
  200.             CursorFG=0xrrggbb
  201.         at which rr, gg and bb are the hexadecimal values in
  202.         the range 00 to FF of the bas color components.
  203.  
  204.     RefreshRate
  205.  
  206.         You can change the vertical refresh rate by the entry
  207.             Hz=nn
  208.         Be carefully by changing this entry. To big values may
  209.         destroy your monitor.
  210.  
  211.     Section [Hardware]
  212.  
  213.     CursorType
  214.  
  215.         In few resolution/color combinations on some S3-based
  216.         graphic boards the hardware cursor doesn't work. In
  217.         this cases you can force the usage of a software cursor
  218.         by inserting the line
  219.             CursorType=SW
  220.         in your ELSA.INI file.
  221.         This affects WINNER 1000 ISA/EISA, VL and PCI.
  222.  
  223.     Video-RAM base address and size
  224.  
  225.         Windows'95 needs direct access to the frambuffer of
  226.         your graphics board. Normally this takes place by 64kB
  227.         segments, mapped into the address space above 0A0000h.
  228.         On VL and PCI systems you can map the full video RAM
  229.         into the host address space. This increases the
  230.         performance of multimedia applications.
  231.         For example, insert the line
  232.             VRAM-Base=0xA0000000
  233.         to map the video RAM at the physical address
  234.         A00000000h.
  235.         Note that this address has to be above the end of your
  236.         main memory and that it has to be a multiple of the RAM
  237.         size of your graphics board. Additionally the end of the
  238.         graphics RAM must not be above the addressable range of
  239.         your bus type. These are for ISA bus 16MB, VL 128MB and
  240.         PCI 4GB.
  241.         If you specify a VRAM-Base you also need to insert a
  242.         VRAM-Size entry:
  243.           for WINNER 1000AVI, WINNER 2000AVI,
  244.               WINNER 2000PRO/X and GLoria use
  245.             VRAM-Size=0x4000000
  246.           and for all other (previous) WINNER use
  247.           the size of the video memory in bytes.

  252. 6.      Known Bugs and Operating Notes
  253.  
  254.     This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives
  255.     hints on work arounds.
  256.  
  257.  
  258. 6.1     Videomode not available
  259.  
  260.     Because the controls for Desktop area and Color resolution
  261.     display ALL possible modes on ALL WINNER boards not all
  262.     indicated resolutions are available. The attempt to select such
  263.     a mode fails. Windows rejects this attempt with a corresponding
  264.     notification message.
  265.

  267. 6.2     No mouse pointer visible
  268.  
  269.         On the WINNER 1000, WINNER 1000VL, and WINNER 1000PCI under
  270.         32 bpp no mouse pointer is visible. Enable Mouse Trails with a
  271.         very short trail in "Properties for Mouse" in the Control Panel.

  274. 6.3     After the installation no mouse cursor is visible
  275.  
  276.     Probably there is no ELSA WINNER graphics driver active, but
  277.     a standard driver for Microsoft S3 processors. This driver
  278.     cannot recognize the the ELSA WINNER graphics board correctly.
  279.  
  280.     - To avoid this problem please install the ELSA WINNER graphics
  281.       driver for Windows 95.
  282.     - Shut down Windows 95 with ALT-F4. While starting press F8.
  283.       In the following menu choose the third entry "3. Save mode".
  284.       Windows 95 will now start in a save mode with standard VGA
  285.       resolution. Now install the ELSA WINNER driver for Windows 95.
  286.  
  287.     or:
  288.     - Activate the software cursor (e.g. animated mouse cursor) or
  289.       the mouse track.
  290.  
  291.     Hints:
  292.     When the Device Manager recognizes the ELSA WINNER graphics
  293.         board correctly, it is possible that no ELSA WINNER driver is
  294.         active.
  295.     With the Device Manager you can get information for all
  296.     drivers (e.g. company). With the ELSA driver you will find
  297.     the entry "ELSA GmbH Aachen (Germany)".

  300. 6.4     WINNER 1000AVI-VL
  301.  
  302.     This board works only with up to 64MB main memory. The S3 chips
  303.     868/968 need 64MB physical address space and the VL-bus can
  304.     only access 128 MB. For this board use the following entries
  305.     in the section [Hardware] in your ELSA.INI file:
  306.         VRAM-Base=0x4000000
  307.         VRAM-Size=0x4000000

  310. 6.5     QuickRes 2.0 and Hardware Cursor
  311.  
  312.         Now it is possible to change the current Color-resolution
  313.         (BPP) without rebooting Windows. Microsoft QuickRes 2.0
  314.         switches the CursorType to Software when changing the
  315.         color resolution. You can switch back to Hardware Cursor with
  316.         "Properties for Mouse". Click Motion/Trail "on" and "off".

  318. 6.6    GLoria-8
  319.  
  320.     The resolution 1024 x 768 in 8 bpp (256 colors) could cause
  321.     problems with vertical refresh rates higher than 100 Hz.
